‘Unidentified flying jellyfish’ video is freaking people out – New York Post

Cool your jets, skywatchers — this “unidentified flying jellyfish” is nothing of the sort.

When folks on the ground in the Amur Oblast region of Russia spotted a strange swirling figure in the sky last month, they couldn’t peg the obscured object.

As it spiraled further through the atmosphere, onlookers can be heard mulling over what the phenomenon could be, in footage obtained by Viral Hog.

The camera operator described the moment they began filming in a description on YouTube: “My friends and I saw the movement of some object in the sky, it looked like a comet, but it flew slowly and we realized that it was some kind of rocket or flying machine.

“A little later it exploded and a pattern in the form of jellyfish was formed, we even heard some kind of sound similar on blast.”

Viewers in the comments section couldn’t help but speculate the falling object’s origins, since meteorites are not an uncommon occurrence in the area of eastern Russia. Others, however, suggested its progeny is strictly terrestrial.

“That’s a rocket,” said one, echoing others who speculate that the smoke was produced by burning lithium, an ingredient of rocket propellant, and whether or not the ship made it to orbit.

Indeed, several test launches have taken place at the newly remodeled Vostochny Cosmodrome launch site in Amur Oblast where the video was shot. Records show that the most recent test launch was completed on July 1 — the same day of the sighting.
